Fripp States During Explicit Recording

Fripp enters the Explicit Recording state when you begin to play the score with the Record button toggled on. Fripp plays your score (whatever you have not muted) and records whatever you play along with it in the voices that are armed for recording. Your sequence ends when you press the Stop button, and if you recorded anything, Fripp imports it immediately into your score.

The following diagram illustrates the various states that can occur during Explicit Recording.

If you haven't completed all MIDI input when playback ends, Fripp simulates that input as it ends the sequence.

Note the similarities between the state machines for Explicit Recording and Adhoc Overdubbing:

Adhoc Overdubbing has an additional state at the beginning, which determines whether you have started recording or not. Explicit Recording "knows" that already. Once that determination is made, the machines operate very similarly. However, once the recording ends, these recording modes are not identical. Both save your recording to history, but your explicit recording is also imported immediately into your score. These inner workings are not depicted here, but it's worth noting, to understand why these recording modes require different composite state machines.
